During the pandemic, Nextdoor observed a significant demand for neighbor recommendations related to home services that made up a substantial portion of business activity on the platform. However, this potential connection between neighbors and businesses had not been effectively capitalized on, and the business pages were not optimized for getting high quality leads.
As the lead designer for Nextdoor’s SMB products, I had the privilege to create and test a marketplace home service providers alongside my design partner. This was a 0 to 1 project we did in 4 months to experiment and learn quickly. Our objective was to help neighbors and businesses find each other, connect and transact in a trustworthy manner. During the pilot, we onboarded more than 300 professionals in San Francisco Bay Area, and that amount was doubling quarter over quarter. Additionally, professionals were getting 5,000 leads per day, and those resulted in more than 1,000 transactions on our platform.
Neighbor experience
When looking for home service professionals, the biggest pain points for neighbors was trust and lack of transparency when it came to pricing. I led design work for business page optimization, which made it possible for neighbors to view pricing and service information, social proof, and recommendations with images.
Business experience
This initiative enabled home service professionals to unlock additional features by becoming “Pros”. Adding pricing and service information helped them to ensure they were getting better leads that ultimately converted to paying customers.
